Kaya Toasts, Kopi & Teh: A Pastry Princess Quest Singapore Edition
I think everyone would be happy & content & have smiles on their face if they will be served some coffee and toast with lotsa butter for a simple, yet tasty breakfast...
the wonderful crunch sound and that almost-burnt-but-not taste whenever one bites into it...that huge slab of butter, combined with this spread that is uniquely Singaporean
( though others would say that it's actually from Malaysia, oh well, let them voice their historical arguments while I'm having of these super delish Kaya toast. *winks )...
IT'S SIMPLY HEAVEN.
And for the moment, it's better than cookie butter/Biscoff spread or what have you. ( Peace Cookie Butter Lovers, I'm switching to being a Kaya Girl. :D )
I SWEAR.
I have to thank Ms. Violet, who's by far the BEST TOUR GUIDE ever! Define excellent customer service in a restaurant, and think of having the same experience while you're having a tour in a city that you know little of...that's her and I'm just really thankful for all the wonderful things that she shared about Singapore. ( Oh by the way, it's Singapora. )
I didn't miss out the opportunity to ask her about the best places wherein one could get traditional Singaporean desserts, baked goods and all those sweet stuff for my Pastry Quest, and talk about perfect timing! From our Chinatown tour, we headed straight here for some delightful kopi and teh.
YES GIRL, they call their tea, TEH. So if ever you'll be traveling to Singapore anytime soon and would love to have a cup of tea, think about your girl friends back from your home country and say it with such passion,
You've got to put a stress on it girl. ( Well this applies to men too you know. *winks )
HAHA.
So you better remember this!
TEH is for tea...
&
&
KOPI is for coffee...
And before this slips my mind, you can actually have three kinds of both. If you want your drink sweetened with condensed milk, just say kopi or teh. Haha I know it sounds a bit annoying, just bear with it guys, we're almost nearing to the Star of this post. ;) If you want it plain with sugar, you have to say, kopi - o or teh - o. And last, but most definitely not the least, you can say kopi - si or teh - si if you want it with milk. :D So for people who are actually fans of black coffee or just plain tea, you better not say, kopi or teh!
*smiles
And now, for the most awaited part of this journey!
Introducing...
*drumrolls please!
PASTRY QUEST SINGAPORE EDITION # 1
YA KUN'S FAMOUS KAYA TOAAAAST!!!
As simple as they look, these toasts - drenched in eggs, coconut milk, pandan & sugar, are your TO DIE FOR BREAKFAST STAPLE!!!
Toasted to crunch perfection with oozing melted butter and a generous spread of Kaya jam, Ya Kun's Kaya toasts definitely deserves the first spot for our Pastry Princess Quest, Singapore Edition! :D I would usually have peanut butter & jelly, or some mango pineapple jam with my toast in the morning, but after trying this one out, I guess I'll be having spreading some Kaya love for a loong while. :D Once you taste it guys, you'll probably considering having them for lunch, snack and even dinner! I guess it's the simplicity in it that makes it so special in its own way. Everyone can make toasts from the comforts of one's home, but it's the also the experience of enjoying it on a fine Saturday afternoon, watching people come & go in one of Singapore's busy streets, and of course, the beautiful memory of family, love & laughter while enjoying such simple pastry. :)
Everyone loved it! Look at my family's happy faces! We surely had happy tummies as well.
*tee-hee
WHERE WE GOT THEM GENES. HAHAHAHA.
Let me also give you guys a sneak peek of where all the yumminess is made. Ya Kun's kitchen!!!
Le Patisserie Princess
This is just one of those vintage wall decors that they have, and I find this one particularly amusing. HAHA. You know how Skinny lattes become the new healthy lattes? Well at Ya Kun's, if you want one, the wall decor says it all. :D HAHA.
Well do you think our Kaya journey is over?
Nah - Ah! :D
We seriously can't get enough of it that we had at least one Kaya Toast per day! We had it also during breakfast from the hotel buffet. ;) Oh you have no idea how happy I was seeing a bowl of Kaya jam waiting to be slowly devoured. :DDD

My mother, from whom I believe I got my sweet tooth from (thanks mother! haha!) , wanted to have her last Singaporean Kaya before our flight going back to the Philippines so we headed straight to Tea Loft, located at Ion Orchard's food court, and tried their version. :D
What I loved about Tea Loft are their cute & vintage style displays that make you feel at home. :) It's very cozy too I may say! :D
SUPER YUUUUM!!! Butter, kaya jam, peanut butter & more butter! :DDD Now this is what I call heaven spreaaad!!! HAHA!
And finally, here's their take on the traditional Kaya & Peanut Butter toast! :D Well, it does taste good but it lacks that crunchiness that we had back at Ya Kun's! Though I loved the fact that there really was HUGE CHUNK OF BUTTER in it, and ofcourse, the Kaya spread, it's something that I can easily make at home with an oven toaster.
So I guess the toast itself makes a lot of difference!
Now for the final verdict from the Pastry Princess, still, nothing beats Ya Kun's version - drenched in coconut milk, eggs, pandan & sugar!!!
Care for some afternoon TEH?
*winks
PS
I will be uploading all the pictures on my Facebook page. :D Feel free to visit guys! :)
